His concept for beginners is an open-air, frosted glass box set in a field with a door that unlocks once the deed is done only if the occupants approach it together. A scent of burnt sugar lingers in the air in order to trigger powerful smell memories later, and a single mosquito keeps the experience from seeming too perfect. "Sex is dirt beneath and clouds above; it's shivering and shared heat; it's vulnerability and safety," Imboden says. "To cap its joy or assuage its fear is to deny its beauty."
