Sexy Gifts Aren't Just for Lovers

Sexy Gifts Aren't Just for Lovers

Good friends deserve the gift of love too, be it self-love if they're single, or safe-love if they're out and about. If, for example, a particular friend is bemoaning the lack of lasciviousness in her life, then either THE NIGHT OFF or THE REBOUND pleasure sets could offer just the pick-me-up she needs. Or, if you have a single friend who often travels for business (and tends to have adventures along the way), a few ESSENTIALS Pocket Pleasure Sets for safer sex on-the-go would be a prudent choice. Of course, it's important to follow certain guidelines in order to avoid awkwardness, embarrassment, confusion… or a toxic cocktail of all three.

Your friend may be a viable sexy-gift-recipient, IF –
  • You regularly discuss your love lives (or lack thereof) in detail.
  • Your gift could in no way be misconstrued as an advance by you (unless that's your intention).
  • Your friendship is independent of any professional relationship (hello, sexual harassment).
  • Your friend has an open mind...
  • ...and a healthy sense of humor.

Teaching Teenagers About Sex

Teaching Teens About Sex

As an avid Jimmyjane blog reader, you're probably able to locate a clitoris – perhaps even your own. But what about America's high school students? According to a recent article in the New York Times, that's just the tip of the iceberg of what they aren't learning.

In the vast majority of schools across the country, sex education falls on the limited spectrum between an "abstinence-until-marriage" approach and an "STD-prevention" one. Accordingly, many teenagers are getting their information (and misinformation) from online porn and other unreliable sources, leaving them unprepared for the emotional complications that come with sex, unpracticed in the open communication necessary for healthy relationships, and unaware of the subtleties of sexual pleasure. To quote one of the male high school students interviewed in the article – "I think I sort of knew where the clitoris was, but I didn't know it was, like, under something." The article, "Teaching Good Sex," presents Sexuality and Society, a course taught by Al Vernacchio – a particularly skilled and beloved teacher at the Friends' Central School in Philadelphia – as a progressive counterpoint to the much more limited education available to most of our adolescents. It's certainly thought provoking, and leads us to wonder – Where would you want your own children's education to lie on this broader spectrum from "abstinence-until-marriage" to "Sexuality and Society"?

How to Get More Bang for Your Gifting Buck

Diamonds can be anyone's best friend (or bedfellow), whether they're hanging on a necklace or embedded in an Everlasting Vibrator. Of course, for most of us, times are still tough – and if money can't buy you love, it certainly can't buy you genuine, unbridled passion. Fear not, there's no need to dedicate a month's pay to any gift, provocative or otherwise. You can opt for an aphrodisiac Massage Oil Candle, a body-safe Vibrating Ring, a discreet Bullet, or even some high-design, high-end condoms – all are under $35.

For an additional twist, consider a D.I.Y. element – write up an IOU for a full-hour body massage, knit a colorful cozy for a beloved sex accessory, or offer an opportunity to try that thing they've always been curious about. (E.g, if spanking is their secret fantasy, wrap up a ping pong paddle with an explanatory note – written in your best cursive, of course.) Any of these options still serve the higher purpose of a suggestive gift – to introduce new provocative possibilities – and they do so at a fraction of the cost. Which bring us to Eternal Truth #73 – a gift from the heart is more valuable than one that lightened the wallet. Cliché though it may be, it really is the thought that counts. Looking for more ideas? Must-Haves for an Unforgettable Gift

Wednesday, November 23, 2011 9:55:17 PM America/Los_Angeles

Venn Diagram

It's that time of year again, when the weather grows colder and we get a little closer to the ones we love. It’s a season to reconnect, to celebrate, to show our gratitude and, of course, to mediate the inevitable family feuds. Often, the time-honored tradition of exchanging presents plays a significant role in all of these activities. Of course, this puts a lot of pressure on us to “give good gift” – especially to our spouses, lovers or significant others. A parent or coworker will readily forgive a utilitarian gift (wool socks, hot water bottle, replacement gas cap), but a lover? Not likely.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all formula for the perfect present (and particularly not in the realm of sexy ones), the best gifts, whether naughty or nice, will generally be – 1. Useful – What's the point of a gift it just sits in a drawer gathering dust, soon forgotten? A great gift will serve a purpose, be it aesthetic, productive or pleasurable. 2. Personal – One person's tchotchke is another's treasure. The better suited a gift is to its recipient, the better that gift will be received. One that says "I know the real you" is the epitome of thoughtfulness. 3. Elegant – Even a carrot peeler can be elegant, so long as it’s well designed, well made, and feels good in your hand. It's not a matter of price or of superficial styling – it's an unquantifiable combination of intelligence, construction and charm. The good news is, you’ll know when you feel it. 4. Unexpected – Unique, unusual or over the top – if it's something the recipient would love but probably wouldn't justify splurging on for themselves, you’re on the right track. Looking for more ideas? On Orgasms & Keeping It Real

Cosmo Declares November 4th International Don't Fake It Day

Cosmo Declares November 4th "International Don't Fake It Day"

A recent poll from Cosmopolitan Magazine revealed that 86% of its readers have faked an orgasm. We can't say that we're terribly surprised. There are plenty of reasons why a woman might fake an orgasm, in fact, it's been scientifically studied. Scientists Gayle Brewer of the University of Central Lancashire and Colin Hendrie of the University of Leeds conducted a study about vocalizations during sex. The study revealed that, while female orgasms were most common during foreplay, the women made orgasm-like vocalizations most often before and during male orgasms. In other words, we tend to make those ooohs, ahhhs and YES's not because we're about to climax, but because we want him to. Now, while there's nothing wrong with coaxing an orgasm out of your partner, verbally or otherwise, it's important not to short-change yourself along the way. Studies show that 33-50% of women experience orgasm infrequently and are dissatisfied with how often they reach it.* Faking an orgasm sends the inaccurate message to your partner that they're doing something that's pleasurable (or rather, positively orgasmic) for you when in fact they aren't. This false-positive reinforcement breaks down the communication that's critical to any sexually satisfying relationship. The more that women (and their partners) learn about their bodies and what makes them feel good, the more likely those women are to have sexually satisfying relationships. Further, the more we talk about a stumbling block like "faking it", the closer we'll be to fixing it. That's why 19 editions of Cosmo from around the world have teamed up to declare today, November 4th, Cosmo's International Don't Fake It Day. The magazine asks that you "stop pretending and actually have the climax you deserve... or at least fess up to your guy why it's been happening so you can work on a solution together." Sign their pledge and agree to join the (honest) fun. If you're looking for some assistance in keeping it real, check out our tips on how to introduce a vibrator into your relationship. Oh, and if you're wondering why we chose the unicorn image, it's because they fake their orgasms too. Thought you should know. *Orgasmic Dysfunction, Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia, September 2002

Food Porn - Spice Up Your Travels

Friday, August 19, 2011 11:53:45 AM America/Los_Angeles

Next time in Paris, consider dining in a brothel – Lapérouse.

Next time in Paris, consider dining in a brothel – Lapérouse.

Your bags are packed for a summer getaway that will leave everything but your lover behind. Whether it's a relaxing weekend in LA or a two-week Euro-tour, a vacation for two is not just a chance to explore a new city, but an opportunity to step outside your patterns altogether.

Often the most memorable experiences of a vacation are when you're immersed in the locale. Sunny days are prime time for holding hands in the park, flirting in museums and kissing in front of iconic monuments. When the sun sets, change into your finery and embark on your evening with an exquisite meal. Exploring the local culinary scene is a great way to connect with a city and to take on a bit of its character yourself. To truly taste the terroir, let your inhibitions loose and order the chef's specialty or a local staple you can't properly pronounce. Let dinner set the stage for the finale to come. From Chicago to Shanghai, here's a list of restaurants that are sure to satisfy – Paris – Lapérouse This 17th-century maison just off the bank of the Seine was once a legendary Parisian brothel. The passion still seeps from the intricate woodwork, and the low lighting brings a luminous glow to the elegant armchairs, grandiose mirrors and ornate chandeliers. Tip – Reserve one of the legendary private salons for two (our favorite is La Belle Otero) and discretely return the room to its former glory between courses. London – The Fat Duck The Fat Duck has held an impressive three star Michelin rating since 1994. The restaurant's dishes aim to heighten all the senses (something near and dear to the Jimmyjane philosophy) and bring a sense of magic and excitement to the dining experience. On occasion, waiters will actually perform tricks, breaking the "no playing with your food" rule with offhand elegance. Tip – If this Duck's a bit too fat for your wallet, trade molecular gastronomy for amazing gastropub and head to the Harwood Arms – the first and only London pub with a Michelin star. Mumbai – Indigo From Brangelina to the Clintons, Indigo makes it on everyone's travel lists. Surround yourself with the glamorous while dining on the restaurant's long-time specialty – risotto with black olive tapenade – and finish with the chocolate fondant with jalapeno peppers. Tip – Sunday brunch pairs live jazz with free-flowing Indian liquor. Shanghai – Wang Bao He Wang Bao He has been serving Shanghai's famous "hairy crab" since 1744 – an ancient meal that foodies around the world praise as a life changing experience. Tip – The gray-green crustacean pairs well with the famed Saoxing "yellow" wine. San Francisco – Locanda This Roman menu is filled with daring ingredients that will transform hesitation into satisfaction. Start with the adventurous chilled pig's head or oxtail, and then move on to the safer pizza bianca. Los Angeles – The Little Door Whether you sit in the winter garden or in the piano room, The Little Door will seduce you with its ambiance. Savor the menu of roasted meats and sip from a wine list full of juicy California varietals. Tip – keep your eye out for celebrities in disguise. Miami – Il Gabbiano Sit under the glowing moon and enjoy the warm waterfront breeze on Il Gabbiano's gorgeous terrace overlooking Biscayne Bay. Indulge in the generous Italian portions and sip from the full-bodied wine list, after raising a glass to the one sitting across from you. Chicago – Prairie Fire Prairie Fire's menu is loaded with seasonal American comfort food from local sustainable farms. The highlights include plump, handcrafted sausage, and their famous dessert menu with "Mom's Seasonal Pies". Tip – Get the banana cream pie to-go for a hotel room treat complete with plenty of whipped cream. New York City – Prune With only 30 seats, the line out the door is always long – but some things are worth the wait. Prune offers perfection without pretention. The tiny dining room and bistro-feel are endearing and honest, right down to the mismatched utensils. Tip – Read Blood, Bones & Butter, the remarkable autobiography of the restaurant's chef and owner, Gabrielle Hamilton.

Let them eat pie.

Monday, July 11, 2011 1:36:47 PM America/Los_Angeles

Let them eat pie.

Love Potion No. 9 may be not available at the grocery store, but a mouth-watering dessert can easily stand in place of an arousing elixir. Thankfully, your local farmer’s market is ripe with seasonal aphrodisiacs, perfect for baking up a delectable treat that will excite more than just taste buds. Ruby red, taut and juicy, the early summer harvest is all about cherries, a fruit with a rich history of feminine (and simply sexual) allusion. From 80’s rock to centuries of slang, cherries have long conjured images of anatomy and the possibilities of the forbidden. As it turns out, there may be science behind the cherry’s ribald reputation. The fruit provides potassium, a requirement for sexual hormone production, as well as an abundance of antioxidants, helping keep skin temptingly beautiful and youthful. Their rich red hue is even said to stimulate pheromone production. (A theory perhaps best tested by rubbing the fruit over lips, nipples and naughtybits.) Think sexy while doing your shopping, and pick up a pint of the irreverent gems – with a little imagination, you’ll find a multitude of ways to enjoy them. Snack on them while reading a dirty novel or while watching porn, rolling the smooth fruit around on your tongue. Stash a handful in the freezer, then use them as a delicious alternative to ice during temperature play. Bite into the cherry and drip the red juices over desirable areas, leaving your partner to lick the sugary trail. Anything you eat with your fingers can become a tease; take turns feeding each other and dangling the fruit above an open mouth before dropping it in. Dip cherries in chocolate for an aphrodisiac double-dose. If you really want to impress your lover, tie on the ol’ apron (preferably over little else) and whip up a warm, sticky cherry pie. Ask your partner for help massaging the crust, taste-testing the filling or whipping the cream – so to speak. Amuse yourselves while you wait for the pie to emerge from the oven, and when the timer dings, enjoy your hot reward right there in the kitchen.
